Paediatrics & Adolescents
We understand that communication difficulties can occur at any age, therefore we provide assessments and treatments for variety of difficulties:
- Expressive language difficulties ( e.g. communicating thoughts and feelings through the use of words, gestures and etc.).
- Receptive language difficulties (e.g. understanding words and language).
- Play skills.
- Speech or articulation difficulties.
- Literacy concerns.
- Fluency concerns (i.e. stuttering).
Speech Therapy
We see children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Global Developmental Delay (GDD) and many more. We are highly experienced in the assessment, treatment of communication difficulties with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and developing therapy goals to better support and empower your child in their everyday life.
Assessment
A comprehensive initial consultation and assessment for families, that usually goes for 1 hour, but duration is dependent on the age of your child. During assessment, we aim to gather information on your child, family, discuss current concerns and complete a mixture of informal and formal assessments. We may also recommend discussing with other health professionals that are/were previously involved in the care of the child.
For younger children, the assessment may be predominately play-based and involved observations of the child interacting with their parents, carers or peers. For older children and adolescents, speech pathology assessments may involve examining a range of skills, such as speech, language, literacy and social communication skills.
Individual Therapy
Therapy sessions are 30, 45 or 60 minutes in duration. The length of the therapy session recommended will be discussed with you based on the results of your child’s assessment. Goals are set collaboratively with the family at the initial appointment and re-visited once the assessment is completed. Weekly therapy is usually recommended which can take place at the child’s home, school, and via Telehealth. Home practice activities are provided for families to maximise your child’s learning of the new skills.
Mobile & Telehealth services
BSPS offers a convenient mobile Speech Pathology service for busy families. Research suggests that therapy in the home, school or preschool environment results in an improved generalisation of communication goals. The Speech Pathologist can teach and demonstrate to the child how to use their new communication skills in their natural environment as opposed to in a clinic environment. Importantly, the best option for your child will be discussed with you prior to developing a therapy plan.
Telehealth, or online services, is also an available option based on your child's engagement and focus, as well as resources. Telehealth allows you to engage with our services from the comfort of your own home.
